Why Big Four Experience Alone Isn’t Enough for Embedded Operating Roles

We get 4-5 applications a month from ex-Accenture, ex-Deloitte, ex-BCG people. Two years in, maybe three. Strong schools, sharp resumes.

Almost none make it past the first technical screen.

The difference is in our “operator” requirements vs what “consulting” meant at a Big 4. It’s like comparing an MBA grad with someone who actually walked the walk and has experienced the practical pressure of running payroll and dealing with clients.

If you spent 24 months staffing rotation projects, building stakeholder decks, and sitting in status meetings, you learned a valuable skill set – but it’s not the one we hire for. DevriX runs as an embedded unit, with retainers starting a few months in, with PE-backed portfolio companies often working with us for 5+ years, some already 9 or 10.

➡️ Our engineers ship production code daily: headless WordPress migrations, HubSpot-to-Salesforce integrations, performance optimization that moves the dial on organic traffic.

➡️ The data teams don’t map out decks, but build ETLs and data transformations, plug operational KPIs into dashboards, and extract data signals from noisy databases or disjointed overlapping CRMs.

➡️ Demand and GTM teams don’t recommend TAM best practices, but test practical hypotheses through “Experimentation as a Service”, with Lovable or Claude Design pages running A/B tests in parallel, running traffic across different networks, gauging CTRs and bounce rates and signals. It’s MVP production facilities that incorporate the industry best practices with the strategic business objectives and nuances for a company.

Because execution and validation is what’s missing in practice.

The client doesn’t want a roadmap. They already bought the operating plan from the sponsor. They need someone who can execute it, debug it when it breaks, and own the outcome.

That requires at least 5-6 years of hands-on engineering or product work before you’re senior enough to lead a portco engagement. You’ve pushed production code that failed, fixed it under time pressure, and learned to sequence technical work in a way that aligns with a CFO’s 90-day milestones.

📝 The profile that works post-Big 4: you did consulting to learn industries and frameworks, then moved to a product company or scaling startup and built things for 3+ years. You know how to talk to a PE operating partner and a CTO in the same meeting. You’ve run a sprint, not just documented one.

If that’s your arc and you’re looking at the next move, we’re hiring senior engineers and GTM/marketers in our HQ in Sofia who can operate embedded in a client’s business. The interview is a working session, not a case study.

Details at devrix.com/jobs – on-site only; overlap with EST helpful to work directly in our squads paired with PE port cos.
