APM Mindset: Why Execution Velocity Is the Most Underrated Hiring Signal in the Agentic Era

APM is my gaming reference I use often in engineering interviews over the past year.

If you’ve played StarCraft or AoE before, “actions per minite” is the key KPI for elite players, commanding many hundreds of actions in just 60 seconds.

Compare that to a beginner clocking 15-20 clicks on average.

This is the version of “velocity” in startup terms as to how many micro goals get completed within the day.

Setting a meeting 2 days from now for what could be a 5min calibration in real time in the next room is counter-intuitive.

Planning a 3-day coding sprint to automate a spreadsheet that’s a simple import + 1 prompt to organize is poor prioritization and tooling misuse.

Relying on ancient IDEs and deployment principles working in enterprises deploying once a month vs. 6-10 deploys a day is rendering day-to-day work impossible.

We see this in other roles, too.

The biggest contrast shift in hiring in the agentic era is execution speed.

When a single niche expert can command half a dozen parallel agents yielding results in 30 seconds each, turnaround time is 200x faster than the 2010s.

The only true constraint is the ability for the human to process information and dispatch between agents and humans quickly with a tiny margin of error.
